Western and Japanese Papermaking: Get Your Hands Wet!
with instructors Zoë Goehring and Catherine Nash
WHEN: Saturday May 10 and Sunday May 11, 9AM-3PM
WHERE: Cave Paper, 846 N. Stone Avenue, Tucson AZ
Co-teachers Zoë and Catherine are excited to offer a fun two-day workshop that will introduce you to both Western and Japanese papermaking using versatile abaca (banana leaf) fiber.
Explore both traditional and ancient techniques: thick and strong, European style paper offers a perfect surface for drawing, painting, and bookmaking, while the thinner, more translucent Japanese style papers inspire beautiful collages and ink drawing.
Learn about pulp preparation, vat concentration, mould movement, pressing, and drying, as we evolve into making beautiful handmade sheets. Participants will experiment with decorative surface manipulation such as raindrop paper, textural embossments, simple pulp painting, embedded images, collage and combined techniques.
Attendees should be prepared to get a little messy. We will provide waterproof aprons, and we advise you to bring crocs or other waterproof shoes, as well as clothing you don’t mind getting damp and pulpy. Weather permitting, we hope to set up our work tables outside in the shade.
For beginners and the more experienced... use this as a chance to make lots of beautiful sheets of unique paper!
When: 10 AM - 4 PM, with one hour break for lunch
Where: Cave Paper, 846 N. Stone Avenue, Tucson AZ
In this class, you will learn the basics of European/Western style hand papermaking, with a focus on exploring the decorative elements of inclusions in paper pulp. Inclusions can be anything ranging from flower petals, to bits of string, to scraps of other paper or fabrics — the possibilities are endless. Objects may also be embedded between two sheets of freshly formed paper.
You will learn to work with flax, abaca, and recycled cotton fibers to form decorative sheets of paper in a variety of sizes and weights. We will provide some material for inclusions, and we encourage you to bring your own materials that spark your imagination! *Please note that we have a No Glitter policy.
The paper you make is yours to keep! Due to drying time, papers will be ready to take home at a later date.
All skill levels welcome.
