Created for the fine press edition of Visual Memories and Hidden Places, Veritas Editions’ collection of photography by Paul Caponigro. A second batch of the design was produced in 2022 for the facsimile edition.

We adapted our resist dye techniques used in our Crackle designs to create this unique paper. Our handmade flax papers were dyed several times with indigo before coating with gelatin sizing. After letting the sized sheets cure, each sheet was crumpled and submerged in black pigment. Everywhere a crack is made in the cured gelatin sizing, pigment is absorbed by the paper. Excess pigment was then rinsed away with water and the papers are hung to dry. We created a strong directional quality in the crackle pattern to reference the photography of the artist.
